An immensely enchanting and sublime soundtrack the consistently
adventurous composer, guitarist, sonic explorer and professor
Fred Frith. The film is about the artist and photographer Andy
Goldsworthy and the film was directed by Thomas Riedelsheimer.
Fred plays guitar, violin, piano, samples and berimbao with
Wolfgang Stryion soprano sax & bass clarinet, Karoline Hofler
on double bass and Bernd Settelmeyer on percussion. The music
recalls a more skeletal version of Fred's previous masterwork
for W&W, 'The Traffic ContinuesS'. Samples of rushing water and
wind open with cautious, minimal plucks from the guitar,
berimbao, soprano sax, contrabass, percussion and piano.
Lusciously recorded so that ever note, every sound radiates and
floats on dream-like space. Shimmering electric guitar, fragile
reed drones, bowed bass and ultra-subtle percussion evoke
ghosts which ascend and die down. Each of the eight sections is
filled with rich and carefully crafted images and sonic scenery
which evolve with a story-like thread. There is a great deal of
suspense involved and Fred utilizes each of his instruments
equally, not just his guitar, since this work is more about
textures and the way work with the images in the film. The
reeds work of Wolfgang Stryi from Ensemble Moderne is
incredible throughout, Fred has found just the right person for
the ever intricate and resourceful job. There are a couple
sections with marching percussion, folky acoustic guitar,
violin and reed which recall one of those charming tunes from
'Gravity', giving this a special Frith-like quaintness, which
is certain to make of us Frith fans smile.

Fred Frith - guitar, samples, violin, piano, berimbao
     Karoline H÷fler - double bass
     Bernd Settelmeyer - percussion
Wolfgang Stryi - soprano saxophone, bass clarinet
