This album was initally released in 1963 for a Hires Root Beer
campaign (hence the "Rootin'" in the title) with Blossom Dearie
singing the "Most Rootin' Tootin' Songs of 1962." The
recordings here continue the tasteful, inventive tradition of
her Verve albums. While Blossom's voice may be an acquired
taste to some, and a bad taste to others, she manages to imbue
every performance with personality, compassion and, often, an
endearing sense of humor. Those who listen will be rewarded.
"Rootin'" was recorded with a jazz quartet of piano, bass,
drums and saxophone (with the sax occasionally replaced by
flute) and while the playing here isn't likely to eclipse any
of the great jazz quartets of the day, they manage arrangements
that are straightforward, inventive and never boring. The
setting lets Blossom fill the songs with her own subtle charm.
"I Left My Heart In San Francisco" and "Fly Me To the Moon," so
familiar now that most people are probably sick of them, are
effective here because they are so unobtrusive; her reading of
"I Want to Be Around" pulls off the neat trick of portraying
good-natured spite; and "Days of Wine and Roses" is sweet
without being treacly. Throughout "Rootin'," as on all of her
best recordings, Blossom Dearie avoids making bold statements
and sticks to the simple joy of making lovely, human music,
which may be the boldest statement of all.
A note on the Japanese import edition of this title: the CD was
mastered from the LP, NOT the master tapes, and some clicks and
hiss are apparent and the overall sound quality is merely
adequate. Since no official re-release is pending, though, the
remastering can be overlooked. Dearie fans should pick this one
up, and for the uninitiated this is as good a place to start as
any.

suppliers, we need only a nice chalet in Switzerland/Canada or a Villa
in the Caribbean sea where to listen to some chillout music.
