Release Notes:
--------------
Previously named Cilantro, The San Diego foursome now known as Cape May
have just released 13 songs of energetic indie-rock unto the masses.
Listeners may at first hear the influence of The Strokes. Lead singer
Andre Che's crooning vocals certainly resemble those of Julian
Casablancas, ripe for radio or MTV2. Cape May boasts a deeper musical
palette than the Strokes, however, who are unflinshingly fixated on
Television and the '70s New York punk explosion.
The fifth track, "No Money," is a monstrous riff-driven trance-rock
ditty similar to The Cars' "Candy-O." later-era Clash like "Know Your
Rights" or heavy-duty Guided By Voices offerings such as "The Enemy."
It's the best-fitting sound for the band, one that allows 'em to shine.
Slower songs such as "Ticking Clock" don't come off as well as the
peppy, mid-tempo tunes like "Mrs. Eleanor" and the impressively catchy
second song, "Come Out."
For a self-released debut, this is a coup. The production has balls,
thankfully sparing us the thin, tinny Pro-Tools sound found on too many
local releases. If you like your indie-rock to actually rock, look
into this. Otherwise move back to Omaha.
