--------------
Pnbna is a collection of acoustic improvisations on stringed
instruments, including mandolin, one-, two-, six-, and four-string
guitars, cello, and acoustic bass. Each of the tracks is an improvised
first take, recorded with no manipulation or treatment of the sounds
themselves. Philip Gayle and his collaborators work toward drawing
untraditional sounds from their instruments (occasionally detuning them
as they play), resulting in a loose and often frantic feel; many of the
stringed instruments turn highly percussive in their hands, and
alternate between spookily dissonant arrangements and calm, ringing
tones. The album also seems to take some inspiration (in general
aesthetics, if not specific musical tones) from traditional Japanese
music, especially on tracks like "Crescent Moonflower" and "Arasha
Korosha." ~ Nitsuh Abebe, All Music Guide
