Dinosaur Jr bassist Mike Johnson (an Oregon native), who had already
collaborated to Mark Lanegan's albums, launched his solo career with
two collections of pensive and funereal ballads a` la Leonard Cohen,
Where Am I (Up, 1994), containing Down The Line and Overland, and Year
Of Mondays (Atlantic, 1996), containing One Way Out. The gentle,
tender, melancholy soulfulness of these works compares favorably with
Lanegan's masterpieces. His melancholy, deep baritone pens the angst of
Where Am I and Left In The Dark, while Circle is unusually upbeat and
the lengthy Eclipse and Overdrive ups the ante of his music.
