Release Notes:
--------------
Vaz features two-thirds of Hammerhead, the critically acclaimed
Amphetamine Reptile trio from Minneapolis. Guitarist/vocalist Apollo
Liftoff (Paul Erickson) and drummer Dionysus Powerdown (Jeff Mooridian)
soldiered along quite capably for a while as a duo, making a name for
themselves with crazy-good live shows: the linchpin of any band on a
small recording budget.

They've brought guitarist Adam Marx (fake name: Judy Station) on board
for The Lie That Matches the Furniture, a murky, muddy, and strangely
magnetic affair. Erickson's vocals are steely and detached, sounding as
if they were recorded from the next room; such pretty things as vocal
harmonies are utterly unexpected, but they make an appearance (albeit a
pretty harsh one) over Mooridian's Tommy-gun fills on the clangorous
"The Blue Hour". The soul of The Lie That Matches the Furniture is
Vaz's churning, chaotic post-punk: the discordant guitar explosion of
"Tri-Panic Express", the rat-a-tat assault of "Sink the Swan". However,
dreamy vibes- or organ-driven intervals like "The Hague", "Mensa
Beast", and "Wined and Blind" are frequent; they break up the album
into a series of rock bites, washed down with surprisingly melodic
instrumental sips that might be sweet if they weren't so damned creepy.

Fairly low production values definitely work in Vaz's favor. The vague
sense of dread that suffuses their music is the main thing that keeps
you glued to The Lie That Matches the Furniture, but that sense isn't
created only by gloomy melodies and obscure lyrics; it's Mooridian's
going-off-the-rails-any-second-now drumming, the half-buried sound of
Erickson's singing, the hollowness of the guitar. Intense and
pessimistic, The Lie That Matches the Furniture is a perfect record for
these times.
