Honig's recent album, Surfaces Of A Broken Marching Band: the haunting pairing of 'Porchside
Economics' and 'Past Tense Kitchen Movement'. The 'Porchside' lead track is a thing of supreme
elegance, driven by haunting slide guitar harmonies swelling cinematically, all framed by a crunching,
understated drum pattern that brings to mind the majestic beat reductions of To Rococo Rot. It's one of
those all too rare moments in electronic music when emotional substance seems to permeate every bar.
Over on the B-side 'Past Tense Kitchen Movement' serves up deep drifts of freeform tonal ambience
intermingled with a filtered background noise that's comparable to Chris Watson's hydrophonic field
recordings - all very murky and submerged, plunging into the subconscious. Even though this release
presents merely a short-form dosage of Honig's craft you still get a very clear impression of what makes
him such a unique force in the electronica community, and of course it's great to have some of his music
on vinyl... Highly recommended.
