Toronto's Still Life Still haven't dawdled in following up their Pastel EP, and
as with that short-form preview, the eventual full-length arrives in top shape
thanks to a Broken Social Scene production turn, courtesy of Kevin Drew and
Martin Davis Kinack. The band have been together since their grade school days,
so you'd expect them to be a fairly tight unit, and their all-round efficiency
can only have been enhanced by their time spent playing on the house-party
circuit. The raucous, Bloc Party-like opener 'Danse Cave' certainly sounds every
bit like the sort of thing that'd have originated from such conditions, and it's
a great starting point, punchily followed up with 'Flowers And A Wreath', which
manages to retain an energised rhythm section while sounding a bit more sombre
and emotionally charged during the blustery choruses. Tokyo Police Club spring
to mind while listening through these songs, and there's a similar tendency to
fall into that dangerous 'generic North American indie' category. That's not an
entirely fair charge however, and Girls Come Too houses its fair share of
memorable moments, though sadly one of the standouts, the Cure-influenced
'T-Shirts', is heavily dominated by a catchy chorus refrain that's ever so
slightly obscene, and consequently will probably be circulating around your
brain for hours to come, like it or not. Plenty of good stuff here - another
worthy addition to Arts & Crafts ever-swelling ranks.
