Tasty Indian music masala from the æ50s
and æ60s What do Italian mandolins,
Mexican trumpets, tropical sounds and
Cuban Son have to do with India?

Sigrid Pfeffer asked herself this
question when she heard some Konkani
songs for the first time in Goa. The
syncopic rhythms of Hindu temple music
shines through in some songs, and is
then immediately interrupted by a flair
of Italian pop or mariachi trumpets.
Sigrid Pfeffer fell in love with this
music, went in search of its roots and
was successful. The origins of the
Konkani songs reach back to the 16th
century when Portuguese sailors and
tradesmen settled in Goa.

One can rarely hear this unusual sound
in today's India. Maybe in a lonely
hotel bar when the personnel turns on
ôAll India Radio Panjimö. Or on the
ôKonkani Songsö compilation for which
Sigrid Pfeffer brought back examples of
this music masala from the æ50s and
æ60s.es
