Following a seal of approval from Mojo magazine as one of the æcoolest
bands of the yearÆ and a string of support slots with such luminaries
as The Futureheads, The Zutons, The Magic Band, The Stands and The
Coral, The Cubical were discovered by Jason Reposar who stumbled across
them during a well-timed toilet stop at the Zanzibar in Liverpool.
Reposar was sufficiently impressed and passed the bandÆs demo into the
hand of his friend Jordan Tappis, owner of LA based Record Collection
records. Later that day, whilst skipping through tracks on his car
stereo Tappis just happened to be giving a ride to Dave Sardy (infamous
producer to the likes of Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, Primal
Scream, Jet and Marilyn Manson). By chance The CubicalÆs demo came on
and the car was filled with whiskey driven blues and Dan WilsonÆs
distinguishably filthy, soulful vocals.
Sardy was immediately taken by these raw demo recordings, so much so
that he promptly arranged to have the band flown out to LA to perform a
showcase gig at the Echo on Sunset Boulevard. 40 sweat infused minutes
later Record Collection offered them an album deal on which Sardy was
to take production duties. Following in the well-trodden footsteps of
The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Captain Beefheart and
Tom Waits they recorded the album at Sunset Sound Studios, Hollywood.
The album was recorded in 4 ôvery intense, sweaty Californian daysö.
Sardy wanted to encapsulate the live energy of the band so the album
was recorded reel-to-reel using an old 60Æs mixing desk. They also
used vintage guitars and amps to try to recreate 1960Æs studio
conditions in order to capture The CubicalÆs sound the way Sardy had
heard it on stage. Being a collector of vintage equipment, Sardy
captured the retro feel of the music by using 1950s telecasters,
battered valve amps, a jazz snare and even an upright piano that was
minus a few keys! Any imperfections were just viewed as welcome
additions to an intentionally rough and ready album.
æLike Me, IÆm A PeacockÆ is the debut single from the album. Sounding
like it has been pulled straight off the decks at a 60s freak-beat
party and drenched in psychedelic blues, DanÆs voice is so filthy,
unique, and gut wrenchingly raw it commands your utmost attention as he
manages to both chastise and plead with us in the same rasping breath.
The single is available as a free download from 24th August. Sign up to
receive the mp3 either on the Dead Young Myspace or The Cubical's
Myspace.
Following a tour of Australia, successful performances at SXSW and a
host of UK shows that included headlining Alan McGeeÆs Death Disco, The
Cubical returned home and were snapped up by pioneering indie label
Dead Young Records. With the future looking bright we canÆt wait to see
what fate has in store for them next.
