Finally one of 2009's breakthrough acts releases her festival anthem as
a single. Part sonic experiment and part Kate Bush, 'Drumming Song' is
a cacophony of delights. "Louder than sirens, louder than bells/Sweeter
than heaven and hotter than hell" pretty much sums up this excellent
love song.
It's a credit to the talents of Florence Welsh that such a new artist
can be this creative without compromise, while still managing to appeal
to a wide audience. Admittedly 'Drumming Song' is just one of a series
of highlights from debut album Lungs, but it's quite simply addictive
to listen to.
Kicking off with nearly every drum noise you can imagine in perfect
harmony the song quickly establishes its chorus before building to a
crescendo and almost religious chant. Layers of sound surround you with
hints of the bass and piano grounding the melody.
It's also loud, very loud, but without sacrificing Florence's soulful
voice and missing the point of the lyrics. It's a song about passion
and excitement perfectly summed up by the arrangement of so many
instruments. You can't fault Florence for having an ear for such a
quirky pop tune either; you'll be left with 'Drumming Song' ringing
around your head for months to come, because it really does make "an
almighty sound".
