Oklahoma born and proud of it, Kay Starr has country music in
her bones, yet despite her versatility and the wide range of
albums she has recorded, these are her only exclusively country
albums for the Capitol label. They make an attractive pairing,
especially as neither has previously beeen issued on CD and
"Tears and Heartaches" is making its first appearance in any
form the UK.
By today's standards, these are very much pop-styled commercial
country albums, but everything Kay sings is worth hearing and
her strongly blues-tinged, dark-toned emotional style is well
suited to the genre. Capitol is unduly coy about recording
dates but "Just Plain Country" was recorded in July 1962 and is
an easy, flowing set, backed by strings and chorus, with Kay
registering strongly as always and making the songs very much
her own.
The oddly-named "Tears and Heartaches/Old Records" is drawn
from three sessions in June 65, January 66 and April 66 and was
Kay's farewell to Capitol, her spiritual home since the mid
1940s, apart from a brief spell with RCA. It's a sad irony that
the final number she recorded at the last session was "Standing
in the ruins". I have heard it said that she wasn't very happy
recording this album, but that certainly doesn't show in a
varied set. In the up-tempo, catchy "Talk, talk, talk" Kay
demonstrates her knack of making much of ordinary material, but
give her a decent number like "I'm so lonesome I could cry" and
she really takes off. Like much of this album, she rises to the
challenge with a typically emotive, bluesy, powerfully
vocalised rendition that's unmistakably Kay Starr, the sort of
thing she does better than anyone else.
The sound wears its years lightly, with more reverb than we'd
expect nowadays, but this collection is terrific value for
lovers of country and all those Starr fans out there. Snap it
up and luxuriate in that great voice of one of our the finest
girl singers ever.

nice to buy when you do not know what you're buying.
As a matter of fact, DGN is a private group, and do not need rippers,
fast or slow shells, traders, t1+ sites, couriers, prewhores, and hw
suppliers, we need only a nice chalet in Switzerland/Canada or a Villa
in the Caribbean sea where to listen to some chillout music.
