Jean-Marc PADOVANI : Composition, arrangements, saxophone
Jean-Marie MACHADO: Piano
Jean-Franτois JENNY-CLARK : Double bass
Paul MOTIAN : Drums
Padovani offers us here a dream trio: Machado is one of the
most inventive pianists on the French scene today. Jenny-Clark
is the regular bassist of pianists Joachim Kuhn and Martial
Solal, while Motian, master of trio playing, from his time with
Bill Evans through to his own current line-up, is nothing less
than an emblematic figure of modern jazz. Considering that
Motian does not chase gigs for bread, his presence here says
enough about his respect for the three French musicians.
Whether on his own or Machado's compositions, or in a dizzying
arrangement of a piece by Ravel, Padovani, galvanised by his
fellow musicians, combines a big sound with melody, rhythmic
verve and hot Mediterranean passion.
Claude Loxhay
"Takiya ! Tokaya !" contains what we like best about Padovani:
his mixture of energetic blowing, lyricism and brusque poetry
(note the tribute to Joyce and Bukowski on the sleeve). What we
also see here is an attention to form, framing the
saxophonist's immediately evident natural qualities. Playing on
the polyphonic relationships between the voices, more than on
harmony or rhythm, the music is structured around meticulous
statements that allow shifts, expositions, and interplay,
revealing the admirable individual talents, and also the
complicity within the group. A mature recording, "Takiya !
Tokaya !" is a masterwork, in the old craftsman's sense of the
term.

Clin d'oeil
When Jean-Marc Padovani hires the services of spiritual twin
Machado, Paul Motian and Jean Franτois Jenny Clarke to play
themes as pretty as "BUK" (a tribute to Charles Bukowski),
"Nocturne" and "Le RΘveil de la mariΘe", the result is an album
you become attached to, that you want savour top-down,
bottom-up, diagonally, every which way, then start over, day
and night, in the car, on horseback...
