Release Notes:
The latest pop export from Iceland, Hjaltalφn are currently riding high in the charts
in their native land, but their assault on British shores is only just beginning.
Don't expect Sigur Ros-style grandeur or sweeping pomp-rock, instead, this lot sound
like they might be in some way affiliated with Asthmatic Kitty, taking notes from
the playful, widescreen exuberance of Danielson and Sufjan Stevens at their most energised.
'Traffic Music' is all brass and rollicking big band dynamics while 'The Boy Next Door'
shifts into full-on chamber pop mode by dropping a harpsichord in amongst the already
orchestrally-proportioned cheeriness.
There are plenty of peculiar highlights: at the end of the album,
their current hit 'Thu komst vid hjartad φ mΘr' sounds like a collision between Keane and Alphabeat,
taking bubblegum pop into elaborate brass-wielding terrain, while the oddly Christmassy 'Sleepdrunk Seasons I'
could be some sort of 19th century classical composition. One of the more baffling compositions here
is 'The Trees Don't Like The Smoke', which although entertaining, is perhaps too much of a blunt instrument,
clobbering you with its essentially very laudable eco-hippy message in such a way as to firmly
put the 'mental' into 'environmental': "put that cigarette out for the trees/
and if you're so sure that it's alright, then why don't you say it out loud to the trees?"
