the big knife is a french duet originating from the city of brest
in brittany , born 3 years ago from a shared passion for music and
the sampling techniques. its members are karouna " dj yuka " and
pierre " snookut ".
the band borrowed its name from the eponymous movie, a 50's
classic directed by robert aldrich.
the 2 partners spend all their free time producing a quiet music
influenced by golden age movie soundtracks, soul, hip-hop or
progressive music. based on samples which judiciously mix
melodious voices, scratches, and down-tempo rythms and layers,
their music helps create warm and weightless moods on a groovy
background. early in the year 2000, they sign with pulp flavor, a
label specialized in down tempo music and the groovy reissues of
seventies french artists.
they produce one title for the compilation "la pulpe", the
mesmerizing "mrs castle", then enter a studio in montpellier to
materialize their work. they come back to it in february 2001 in
the office of the label where, with the help of the engineer fred
"brain" monestier, they complete the mixing and the pre-mastering
of their first opus: model shop.
