Release Notes:
AinÆt too often you get a three page biography with a debut album, but
then Kid Harpoon has a fair bit of explaining to do. In 2007 the then
Holloway local was on the verge of breaking despite the æindie bubbleÆ
being in the initial stages of absolute retardation from a flood of
mediocre albums. But then - nothing.
As the story goes, dissatisfied with his place within the pack, Kid
Harpoon daringly threw his first album attempt to the dogs and shacked
up with music-biggy Trevor Horn to write and record æOnceÆ. ôI feel
like IÆm aliveà With you as we ride àö sings Kid Harpoon so sweetly on
opener æStealing CarsÆ. ItÆs as if rainbows and butterflies have just
spurted out of his throat as this catchy Doris Day-ish opener preempts
the general wonderfulness of æOnceÆ. Long time fans will note the
transformation of æColoursÆ the Kids most adored tune, with a sashay of
strings adding a glistening intensity to track.
The show tune quality of Kid Harpoon's songwriting makes each of the
twelve titles easily likeable and instantly memorable. Emotionally
loaded, his gift of the gab is on par with Alex Tuner in this
delightful debut as æBuried AliveÆ and title track æOnceÆ showcase the
songwriter's more sombre sentiments. Though the tweaks of Trevor Horn
has left a certain lavishness to the LondonerÆs musical garb, it is the
prevailing honesty of Kid HarpoonÆs trade that makes this a mighty
special and endearing listen. æMariannaÆ is a dangerously joyful and
though his lukewarm vocal remains somewhat underwhelming, the lad is
more than a man with a guitar, this kid has a whole lotta heart.
