Another European guitarist, though one far less explicitly transatlantic
than Muthspiel. Italian guitarist Battista Lena has certainly listened
to the prominent contemporary-jazz exponents of his instrument, but
composition is his driving force, and he composes in a distinctive
manner that suggests a southern-European Mike Westbrook. Lena uses an
Italian brass band here in a vivacious music packed with street-march
themes and circus music. His own guitar-playing is a background feature,
though the fine trumpeter Enrico Rava has a solo role. And, as if to
reflect wider European possibilities, this attractively packaged
two-disc set even encloses an Italian- and a French-language version,
with the charismatic Rokia Traore taking a vocal role on the latter and
Colin Towns's singer Maria Pia de Vito on the former. The music shifts
exuberantly from stamping Latin-dance patterns to whirling street-
parade music, flaring through staccato crescendos that lead to
explosive accordion solos (Luciano Biondini's is spectacular).
Apart from Rava, the standout soloist is the remarkable Gabriele
Mirabassi on clarinet, a commanding presence whether pirouetting
through the melee or musing in silent spaces. There might be a little
too much spoken word here for some - but it's the spoken word at its
most musical, even if the theme of the Russian cosmonaut might puzzle
non-linguists. - John Fordham (http://www.guardian.co.uk)
