Imagine if a British band named themselves after a British river. The
Thames, the Trent, the Ure... Imagine the derision and ridicule theyÆd
invite, as smug music journalists would scoff at their cultural
ignorance and lack of creativity.

Well, kudos then to Californian heart-tuggers Gran Ronde, for first of
all, not giving a monkeys what we think and second of all, picking the
most appropriate band name ever... except maybe The Enemy.

You see, the Grande Ronde River drains an isolated area, saturated in
run-off from the Blue Mountains, passing scenic valleys and canyons on
its way and if you canÆt understand the significance of this as a band
name, then you should probably give Secret Rooms a miss.

Unfortunately for them, as is the norm for all moody bands of late, Gran
Ronde have drawn a lot of comparisons with Interpol, Editors and The
Cure, which are û although favourable û ultimately lazy assessments.

Sure, the likes of æOn and OnÆ and æRun Me OverÆ are all dark, cavernous
and spiralling guitars, pummelling drums and soaring baritone vocals,
but more often than not, the bandÆs sound owes more to the skulky
melodies of Radiohead and, intriguingly, Æ70s pop-punk.

Title track æSecret RoomsÆ is basically Bryan FerryÆs æLetÆs Stick
TogetherÆ abducted, ironed out and dropped in a dingy Californian
abattoir, whilst æWisdomÆ sounds like a drive-time Wipers song.

With a little press and exposure, Gran Ronde could well prove to be the
United StatesÆ answer to White Lies, but to pitch the two against each
other would be unfair.

The formerÆs æSecret RoomsÆ û although a more measured beast than the
latterÆs debut û actually retains a far more organic feel, bound to sit
well with those immune to White LiesÆ almost formulaic attempts to
uplift.

Enjoy!
