Based in Naples and named after an infamous Mexican skeleton that left a legacy
of semi-composed music in the 800s, Horacio take inspiration from not just his
name but also his music. This plus a healthy dose of dub, jazz, deep house, and
techno influences, shaken with a little bit of flamenco, is what makes their
music unique and naturally explosive on the dance floor.
The Horacio Is Back EP takes a trip downtown and up first, Durango and its New
York funk-infused beats is your sure fire way to kick-start any party.
Mysterious and muted vocals keep things a little bit dark and its infectious
tech undercurrent makes it the perfect warm up for the rest of the record. Don't
miss the awesome dub tip in the last ten seconds too; it's a smoke signal to say
the best is yet to come.
Continuing on a funk revival, the title track Horacio Is Back is laced with a
thumping baseline, likely to be heard pumping out from the depths of underground
clubs from Berlin to New York and back again. It opens to the sound of an eager
crowd, before launching a loop of addictive vocals and bursting into it's full
potential with drum rolls, smashing cymbals and a couple of feel good build-ups
thrown in for good measure. Just what the doctor ordered if you're looking to
hold onto that summer vibe long into autumn.
Last but not least, El canto de la Mujer Barbuda completes the trio of
guaranteed party starters although this one might be best saved for the
chill-out room. Available on digital release only, this track is a nice little
extra and whilst not as immediately catchy as Horacio Is Back and Durango, it's
warm, smooth beats offer a welcome and soothing break.
Overall, the Horacio Is Back EP is a bit of a journey - one amazing 'night of
your life' party all crammed into twelve inches of vinyl, and thanks to the
digital extra, it even arrives complete with the perfect soundtrack to wind down
to. It's a bit funkier than some current releases, and with deep house roots,
makes a refreshing change to minimal on the world's turntables.
