If there's only one element from which people will take from house & techno in
2009 it will be anonymity. Last year in a interview with Bodytonic, Ben Klock
was asked where he saw techno going in 2009, from which he replied "Techno will
get deeper & intense again". A lot of the electronic music coming through today
is reminiscent of techno that was around in the mid to late 90's. Its got dark
again, its raw, unknowing, and basic & a good percentage is anonymous which lets
the music speak for itself. No fancy gimmicks, no Myspace, no clothing line just
the music. Horizontal Ground who have just released their second EP aren't
strangers to this world of anonymous techno, in fact Horizontal Ground is the
sister label to another, well blossoming, anonymous techno label, Frozen Border.
Hand-stamped & extremely limited, coming with very little information except for
a email address of which is also found on the wax. HG01 is anonymous to the
core. The A-side is a sparse techno tool which focuses around a heavy kick-drum,
a male vocal sample & some serious whining riffs, which literally bury beneath
your skin. It's hypnotic & rhythmic but has a distinct, raw house feel to it,
which I like. The B-side builds slowly with an eerie organ solo and lone kick
which eventually gives way for the hi-hats. Definitely one for the heads. Pure
as the day is long, its a slow builder that will slot in-between your set like a
well fitted glove.
