whatever became of the highly praised south london trio spacek,
which some bright spark once very fittingly described as the
"radiohead of soul" following their epochal 2001 debut
("curvatia")? with "motion control" (!k7 records), the single from
the second album released in summer, they once again furnish
evidence of just how much visionary vibes require musical
uniqueness. a new opportunity for everyone with a taste for
spiritual music to discover spacek. music that digs deep rather
     than spreading out.

the incredible hypnotic sound architecture, on which producers
steve spacek and morgan zarate and guitarist edmund cavill have
been working since the mid-90s and which they now take up once
again for the single tracks "motion control" and "it's not gonna
happen", has never been heard so definitively: the
     stripped-to-the-bone r&b, harmonious downbeats and steve spacek┤s
soft but nevertheless strongly evocative floating vocal style have
in fact earned spacek comparisons with massive attack through
marvin gaye and on to d'angelo, but their sound essentially
remains beyond explicit classification. just like good design,
nothing more can be squeezed out of this music (as can be heard in
the instrumental version of the double a-side "it's not gonna
     happen").

but what ultimately holds together spacek's fascinatingly fragile
song structure in particular - how such an intense complexity of
heard and imagined resonance evolves from the restraint in the
sound and why everything (even the programming) sounds so
infinitely organic - remains unclear. timeless and futuristic at
the same time - you could well call that magic. spacek's magic
won't jump up and slap you in the face - but once you've seen the
light, you can't do without it... cause i know you got soul.
