The Montreal instrumental quintet Sweet Mother
Logic proffer their debut full-length, a rambling
collection of 11 epic compositions in a prog
rock/fusion vein. Guitar, bass and piano do battle
with cellos, synths and organs, stirring up a rich
mix of retro and contemporary sounds. While I
prefer languid, ethereal cuts Anthomedusae and
Fractal Hands, SML aren't afraid to indulge in
raucous, funky and faster-paced bits also - Ghost
Army even leaps into a four-on-the-floor beat for
house heads. Fans of cinematic, wordless tunesmiths
such as Secret Chiefs 3, Cinematic Orchestra or
Bell Orchestre will relish the excellent
production, warm sonorities and spirited playing.
