If Mr Raoul K's previous 12-inch for Mule Musiq was his chance to show
off his heritage, the original mix of "Moment Psychedelik" is him
moving far past it. In fact, if "Wind of Goree" could be described as
earthen, "Moment" is suitably cosmic. There are few traces of acoustic
elements here, only whirling synthesizers that never stop rotating,
and a drum machine that pumps pleasantly along, unaware of its
surroundings, which seem to be composed largely of tidy washes of
ambience. It's a track that takes every moment of its nearly eleven
minutes to unfurl.
K's original mix here is more Lindstrom, and the gongonmix more Culoe
De Song. It's fascinating to hear how a few touches here and there can
so irrevocably change the feeling that a track evokes. A bit of
rolling percussion and we're firmly in Afro house, but it's the same
synths hanging their everlasting chords in the background. It's purely
a matter of DJing taste as to what you'll prefer. For my money,
though, the original bangs just a bit harder than its counterpart
despite both being buoyed by the sort of synths you feel like you
could ride off into the sunset with.
