soulful dance music.. music with emotion that deserves the promotion..

An interesting idea, it'd be disappointing where this package not to
live up to expectations. The EP's original tracks, Lawler's own
'Hocus Pocus', Audiofly's 'Shazam' and Tiefschwarz's 'Voodoo' were
all conceived whilst traveling across the United States as part of a
VIVa Tour. Born in the studio which also doubled as their tour bus,
each track was then completed by each artist on their return home. To
reiterate, it's intriguing stuff so let's take a peak of what's to
come.....
First up on remix duties is Matt Edwards take on Lawler's 'Hocus
Pocus'. In short, it's in line with the sort of tribal house which
Mr. Radio Slave has been endorsing all summer. Complimented by an
African tribal vocal, it's the kind of record which will provide a
snapshot of electronic music in 2009 in years to come. While it may
have been something of a coup for Lawler to get Radio Slave on board,
when listening to the track in it's entirety, the result is somewhat
underwhelming. After the success of tracks like Reboot's 'Caminando
and Michel Cleis' La Mezcla', one can't help feel that Edwards own
take on tribal house has been released the wrong side of summer 2009.
It may well prove me wrong and go down well in a club but vocal
aside, there's little to differentiate this mix from the original
track. As a Radio Slave fan, the effort just smacks of laziness and
is far removed from his best work. He's also producing pointless 30
minute tracks these days. Let's hope he finds his marbles soon.
The same can't be said of young UK duo, Syrossian and Nyra who
deliver a far more polished effort. Their take on the track is far
more inventive. By sprinkling the original with layers of percussion
and minimizing the regularity of which the vocal is used, they've
shrewdly managed to enhance the vocals power. The result is a spine
tingling vocal which will be the cue for many a hands-in-the-air
moment wherever it is played. Between Radio Slave and Syrossian and
Nyra, it's obvious it's the latter is more determined to impress.
Completing the 'Hocus Pocus' package is Patrick Zigon, who turns in a
more downtempo loungey effort of the kind you'll hear in many a chill
out area. A nice inclusion, not least for Dj's who don't want to play
all their tracks at 128 bpm.
The second EP features remixes of German duo Tiefschwarz's 'Voodoo.'
Hungarian upstart Son-Tec is on hand for the first remix which
incidentally, is also his first release on the label. He turns out an
impressive debut, a bittersweet track with an aggressive bassline yet
calm vocals. Tolga Fidan's 'Black Magic mix' fares even better. The
originals attitude is kept intact, while Tolga has peppered it with a
host of contrasting efx. While it's a nice track with obvious
potential, it all sounds a bit similar from the beginning to the end,
which wouldn't be a problem if it didn't topple the 9 minute mark.
Another example of a track which could do with a slight reworking
then.
Completing the package is David K and Leon, who both offer remixes of
Audiofly's 'Shazam.' Of the two, Leon's is the more impressive and
has a far rawer edge. It's a wonky techno bomb which won't be to
everyone's taste, but it's a more than stellar number which will be
appreciated by VIVa devotees in particular. Rounding off the set is
French maestro David K who opts for a more deep house sounding
approach to the remix. Nice and deep, the track ticks all the right
boxes bar the vocal, which sounds far too generic.
The 'On The Bus' EP is a generous helping of tracks, but much will
depend on how the bundle is marketed. If it's the same price as three
EP's, it's unlikely fans will be rushing out in their droves to pick
it up. On the other hand, if they decide to price it as as 3 for 2,
you could do worse with your hard earned. Solid, but for a Dj of
Lawler's magnitude to promote this, it's also somewhat disappointing.
Expecting gold, we got bronze.
