Albert Huybrechts was born in Dinant in 1899. Whereas in the
twilight of this nineteenth century the fashion of accursed
romantic artists was decidedly on the wane, Albert Huybrechts
was one who took this path without flinching. Born in the rue
de l'Enfer (Hell Road) in relative poverty, he accumulated
unhappiness and disappointment throughout his short life.
There was nothing out of the ordinary in this dull destiny
beyond the first performance of his Sonata by Alfred Cortot
himself and the attention, albeit distant, of the wealthy
Madame Coolidge. This CD, the first in a complete edition,
presents three of the most emblematic works in Huybrechts
catalogue: the Sonata, which met with the above-mentioned
honour, Chant Funebre, symptom of a melancholy that was more
than just put on, and String Trio, of a supposedly ominous
beauty. This CD also marks the return to the studio of the
French virtuoso Pierre Amoyal. David Lively and Marie
Hallynck are for their part well-known figures on our label.
