Two years into spinning tunes, Italian Alex Picone gained his first residency at
underground club La Scala at 17. On the back of this success, he fine tuned his
skills at Flow and Il Muretto, where he also befriended top DJs Richie Hawtin,
Marco Carola, Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano. Big news for a new kid on the
block. Since then, and like his friends in high places, he has launched his own
imprint, Tenax Recordings and formed Chronic Flakes - home to his previous EP
Sweet Revenge - with partner Francesco Sperotto (aka Kay Sand). Now, he turns
the focus of his attention back to honing his own productions, with the release
of the Thai EP this month on D'Julz's Bass Culture Records. Mon Amour is first
up and kicks things off with a simple bass and cymbal formula plus rhythmic
knocking sequence. A gentle, warm and pulsating sound undulates through the
track before the single strike of an organ steals the limelight. As the organ's
volume increases to full potential, everything else momentarily fades, as a
bassline strong enough to tear apart even state-of-the-art speakers is injected.
Impressive to say the least. The tune wraps up with the same knocking beats
taking centre stage once again, and paves the way for the best that's yet to
come. Next up, Chris Carrier reinvents Mon Amour with his Analog remix and it's
definitely the one to watch. Described as "fresh, ass kickin' and innovative" by
Systematic Records producer Marc Romboy, it bursts open with a Chicago house
feel. A festival of high hats, percussion and a suffocating sub-bass launches,
and its funky vibe with sprays of cymbals makes it pack a whopping punch that
far supersedes the original. Last but not least and with a thicker, monster
bassline, In Amour features an indistinguishable vocal throughout. A little too
frequent, it takes over from the ace underlying arrangement that begs for a
piece the spotlight itself. A mysterious meditative layer arrives in waves a
little later, completing the track, before it spins off into the distance. From
Karotte to Reboot, Loco Dice to Varoslav; Picone has full support on this
release from some of the world's most in demand DJs. With its grimy, funky feel
and down-right-dirty sub-bass, it's easy to see why. Make sure you don't miss
this heavily backed bomb of a record, as Robert Dietz quite rightly expreses,
"Mr Picone is on fire."
