Urbano Barrera first started dabbling his hand in music back in
1977. He was taught by his father in the art of playing the gonada
drum, an instrument that basically comprises half a viola and half
a conga drum. His Great Great Grandparents first developed this
instrument in 1756. The instrument is infamous with the peasant
farmers from his ancestral region of Testillara in northern Cuba.
It is basically constructed from tobacco leaves woven with fish
bone giving it an extraordinary, low resonant sound. In the early
eighties Urbano managed to be one of those who fled Cuba by sailing
on a canoe the 90 miles to the Florida coast of Miami. After a two
year stint working in Bars Urbano got the money to travel to his
dream City û New York. Once in the Big Apple he would discover the
bubbling nightlife of Manhattan, dancing and partying in different
clubs from The Flamingo to the Paradise Garage. Urbano always had a
real passion for dance and one cold night in 1985 when he was
outside the Roxy waiting to see Red Alert, a Yellow Cab crashed
head on into a fire truck. With all the commotion Urbano ran over
and managed to pull the cab driver from the wreckage, this would be
the first meeting of Urbano Barrera & Benjamin De Angelis and the
beginning of an ever-lasting friendship. Benjamin De AngelisÆ debut
in music started later in around 1979. Growing up in Queens with
his Argentinean parents, Benjamin was taught on a strict diet of
Spanish guitar. Benjamin got an apprenticeship to the M.A.D
Manhattan School of Drama, but fighting his passions for rock &
disco he was extricated by his family. Taking to the streets in
search of work Benjamin got a bus boyÆs job at CBGBÆs live venue.
One of the regular bands playing at the Club was The RamonesÆ
support act Shooting Gallery Blues. Benjamin was really fascinated
by their sound, best described as Progressive Latin Punk Funk, and
could not wait to catch them every time they played. Until one
night the guitar player did not turn up. Benjamin, seeing a golden
opportunity, approached the lead singer and asked if he could play.
The lead instantly ridiculed him as just being a bus boy and the
rest of the band joined in mocking Benjamin. In anger Benjamin
pulled out his Gibson electric guitar & plugged himself into the
amp and played the bandÆs theme tune ôTighten the Veinö chord for
chord. In astonishment the band agreed to give the Kid a go.
Fortunately for Benjamin bizarre luck would strike again as
Shooting Gallery BluesÆ guitar player would never show ever again û
Overdosing and passing away û BenjaminÆs guitar fortune began. A
year later amazingly another occurrence would happen to bring
Urbano into the band. At a gig at the Trocadero on Sunset
Boulevard, Hollywood, Shooting Gallery BluesÆ drummer was shot dead
after an argument in an after show party. With the urgency of the
next nightÆs gig in San Francisco Benjamin got on the phone and
told Urbano to get to San Francisco as they needed a drummer. The
Band would continue without any further fatalities but they never
managed to get a recording contract being turned down by several
majors during the late eighties. Shooting Gallery Blues did get a
lot of studio recordings done though, and by 1987 the band would
fold. Benjamin & Urbano would then go on to form another band
Devils Horn, a group fuelled on rock influences from Led Zeppelin,
Megadeath, ACDC, and Santana. This was their new direction. In 1990
the band got their first ever European tour û six dates in Germany,
Switzerland, Holland, Denmark & the UK. The tour would be the last
thing they did, as their bass player would run off with one of the
backing singers with a large proportion of the tour money. Benjamin
& Urbano were stuck on the final leg of their journey in
Worcestershire. They managed to coerce one of their loyal fans
Gemima Klieg, a Jazz singer, to save the last date. Gemima would
agree to join the band as long as Urbano agreed to be the father of
their child. As soon as the tour finished tough pressures would
split the band up. Urbano with his fiancΘe would stay in England to
bring up their child while Benjamin went back to New York and got
work at New YorkÆs famous mastering centre Frankford Wayne.
Learning the art of mastering Benjamin would start up his own
studio working with various Rock, Soul and Dance acts during the
mid nineties. In 1999 Urbano made a trip back to America, hooking
up with his long lost partner Benjamin. After working together for
so many years they both decided it was time to give it another go.
Taking the session tapes from the Shooting Gallery Blues & Devils
Horne recordings Benjamin and Urbano have re-edited all their
tracks and their brand of drum heavy funk and disco will be
re-released in 2009/2010.
