Bobby Peru's Death of a player album is superb. That's all there is
to it. And Bobby, aka Paul Woolford's to do list reads like everyone
else's "Ultimate Life Missions". Resident at one of the best and most
respected clubs in the country, he's also producing tracks for some of
the worlds best, and his status is growing by day. So how exactly did
it all start for this softly spoken Leeds lad? 'I was mixing from the
age of about 12, and started making tracks at about 15 or 16, messing
around with keyboards...', he begins '...then my first release came
when I was 17.' Fair enough. So how did the album with 20:20 Vision
come about? 'Well, I was going to Basics for like, 9 years...
first clubbing, then djing and 20:20 has been going for 6 of those.
I've always been into the music they've put out and knowing Ralph,
it seemed logical to approach them. One of the studios where I was
doing stuff was round the corner from the [20:20] office, so I thought
I'd pop in and let them hear it. Half an hour later I was sat there
with a cheque in my hand.'

One of the things you notice most about the album is it's reluctance
to be pigeonholed. Tracks range in influence from acid to techno to
electro tinged breaks. So any personal faves on there? 'I think Duel's
the closest to a favourite track on the album. It's the hardest, but
that's not why I like it. It just sounds the most like what I want to
say with the album really.' And with it's huge classical build-up and
razor sharp, techy beats, it certainly pulls no punches. Does that mean
that when he sits down as Bobby Peru, he purposefully sets out to not
write to a certain style? 'Well, that's a good question. I think of
it as an open ended project. I'm into all sorts, I can't be bothered
to just listen to one style, so I won't discriminate for Bobby Peru.
I could sit here and knock out a load of tech-house tracks, but that
     wouldn't be me.'

And that open-endedness is what makes the album so fresh. Together with
a healthy dose of rather tongue-in-cheek samples and soundbites, of course.
'I love the internet for finding those samples', he says of the crazy
selection of which grace the downtown between tracks and in breaks.
There's a website where you can check out any police band from any city
in America. And for listening to regional stations and taking tiny pieces,
it's great fun.' So who's the homey talking about music and climbing the
ladder of fame? 'Oh! That's Paul Johnson's brother. He runs a label in
Chicago, and it was recorded at some club in Ibiza. A mate of mine took a
DV camera and went round recording little snippets of people. Danny Rampling
did one, and that guy did one - his was the best so we just used that!'

I ask him about the mastering process, and whether or not the arrangement
of samples between tracks had been entirely down to him. 'The mastering
process is quite humbling really. I was there and they had a copy of
Combat Rock by the Clash on the wall; I couldn't believe it.' he says honestly.
'You've been working on this thing for a year - making it perfect - and then
you take it down, sit there all day and listen over and over. It's kind of
boring until you watch it being cut onto the plate right there, right in
front of you, into the fucking plastic. It's quite a special moment.'

That special feeling is obviously rubbing off onto others too, and now now
that he's becoming bigger, I ask him if there's anyone he'd like to work with.
'I think I'm working with them! I've got tracks forthcoming on Darren Emerson's
label Underwater, one coming soon on Cube, Junior Sanchez's label, and the
10,000 BC stuff [which he's worked on with Yousef] has just been picked up by
    Junior Boys Own.'

So what of his own influences? If he were to pick one person who has had the
biggest effect on his work? 'Well I can't pick one. There's three actually:
Derrick Carter, Carl Craig and Derrick May. They've all had an effect and they've
all inspired me to some extent.' And what about people who have broken through
recently. Is there anyone who he thinks will be going places soon? "Yeah, actually.
There's two French guys called Ali and Farid, The Eternals. They're doing that
French 80's thing properly, with typical French style, you know?'

So life, it would seem, is fairly rosy for Paul Woolford, 26, from Leeds.
But none of it's gone to his head. On the way back to town in the taxi
20:20 label manager Barry gets a call. The album has just received 5 out
of 5 from DJ magazine. 'Oh...Fucking Get In!' he shouts understatedly,
with all the tempered excitement of a true gentleman. This is one man who
    certainly deserves everything he gets.

Death of a Player is out on February 25th on 20:20 Vision.
