Matt Coleridge
"I think the most important aspect to being a DJ is
truly sharing the music you believe in with those who
listen. It's that excitement of introducing new music to
people that drives my passion for playing and fuels that
never-ending search for new music. I think as a result
the style I play is a little wider than most DJs. I do
think I have my own sound, something that can be
somewhat defined as "progressive", but I hate to be
pigeonholed by a title. I know it's cliche to say but
good music is good music. What it comes down to is that
I play what Ilike."
It's this passion for music that has seen Matt Coleridge
become one of Canada's most promising new DJs. His
smooth mixing and intelligent programming have earned
him consistent praise both from his fans and his fellow
DJ peers. Matt has developed that rare phenomenon of a
loyal following that seems to be increasingly harder to
find in today's dance music scene of a million and one
DJs.
Resident of Breathe Fridays at System Soundbar, Matt
Coleridge has played an important role in the night's
evolution into one of the biggest weekly club nights in
Toronto and one of the more prolific nights in North
America. Breathe sees him on a weekly basis play
alongside major international DJ talent as well as rock
the crowd with his own 6 hour resident night sets.
Matt's DJ beginnings started like many as a bedroom
hobby brought on by the discovery of the burgeoning
Toronto rave scene in the mid 90s. Matt moved to Toronto
full-time in the summer of 1998 and the next few years
saw him playing regularly at small club nights and raves
in and around Southern Ontario. In the fall of 1999 Matt
started a small party series called Solution, offering
up talent such as then to be superstars Max Graham and
Kenny Glasgow. In December of 2000 Matt landed a guest
set opportunity at the fledgling Breathe night. Matt is
the only Toronto local to be offered a peaktime guest
set with Breathe. Based on the success of that set Matt
became resident shortly thereafter.
The past year and a half has seen Matt's Toronto and
Canadian profile rise dramatically. He's played
alongside a long list of the biggest names in the
industry, Seb Fontaine, Marco Carolla and Danny Howells
to name a few. He's opened for Steve Lawler in the
intimate confines of the Toronto favourite, Element Bar
and he's opened for DJ Tiesto in front of 3000 people in
the worldclass Guvernment/Koolhaus complex. He's played
across Canada to thousands of people. And, he's received
numerous recognitions from his peers including Tribe
magazine mix CD of the year 1999 and Eye Magazine Best
New Upcomer 2000.
Summer of 2002 sees a number of new chapters in his DJ
career unfolding. Matt has immersed himself in the
studio environment and the results are starting to show.
His first few tracks have received high praise both from
fellow DJ peers and from the Breathe dancefloor.
Solution, his party series has been resurrected with the
help of friend, rising internationally recognized DJ
Luke Fair. Solution has become a huge Toronto success,
it continues to offer world-class music in an intimate
environment on a monthly basis.
