Another HOT Release from aAF!
Allegro was recorded throughout 2001 in Robert's own
studio and introduces a number of musical elements that
will enchant his growing legions of fans. Those include
a string quartet, a new and innovative precussive guitar
style and, perhaps most notably, Robert's vocals.
"I knew at some point that I'd bring them back to my
music," says Robert talking about his decesion to record
vocals on this album. "I need to expand musically and
this isn't foreign to me. It was actually more unusaul
to do so many instruments when I used to sing quite a
few numbers in my set as a soloist."
Robert's voice makes it's debut in "Holding On" the
first single from Allegro. Just one listen confirms that
Robert's vocals are no novelty but rather a legitamate
instrument that only adds to his arsenal of sound. The
song also proves that he has a keen pop sensibility. A
gorgeous video to accompany the track was shot on the
streets of Havana, Cuba and around the city's beautiful
harbour.
In addition to the single, Robert also takes a vocal
turn on The Doors classic "Riders On The Storm."
Vocalist Shelley Hamilton makes a guest appearence on
the album to sing the lead on the Phil Collins hit "In
The Air Tonight." Each of these songs have recieved
Robert's unique latin interpretation.
Much of Robert's earlier recordings were described as
"flamenco-jazz" but with Allegro he focuses on expanding
his musical palette. The tracks "Charanga" and "Cubano"
are clearly flavored by a trip he made to Cuba in the
early 80's. On the song "Sunchild" Robert offers a
unique take on the ragga-muffin style of Jamaica.
To fully appreciate Robert's talent one need not go any
further than the track "Velocity" Hear you can actually
hear the artist at work. Robert had sat down to record
an overdub for the track "Desert Chase" when this piece
began to fly out of his fingers. He quickly reached over
to press record and what you hear was the one and only
take of the track. What is most remarkable is that in
the course of the song Robert introduces a unique style
of playing in which he make his guitar sound like a
flameco dancer in motion.
