There is a great deal of stylistic overlapping between the
three solo projects that Butch Thompson recorded in early
March 1989; the others are New Orleans Joys and Good Old New
York. While the former focused mostly on Jelly Roll Morton,
his Chicago tribute has six additional Morton tunes
(including "King Porter Stomp" and "Fickle Fay Creep"), plus
numbers by Dink Johnson, Leroy Carr, W.C. Handy ("Beale
Street Blues"), King Oliver, Clarence Williams and Little
Brother Montgomery; Thompson also remakes his own "A' Solas."
It is a pity that Butch Thompson did not investigate the
Chicago pianists (such as Earl Hines and Joe Sullivan) more
on this CD, which would have given it more of a distinctive
personality, but the music is certainly well played and will
be enjoyed by 1920s jazz collectors. Scott Yanow
