Ewan Pearson is the renowned Soma artist MAAS, his debut in 1997 was
the critically acclaimed 'Latitude'. He is currently in the studio
producing new material for a follow up intended for next year. In the
meantime Soma have amassed his favourite remix productions for "Small
Change", this collection perfectly displays the diversity of his
productions.
His interpretations range from dancefloor treats such as Count Zero's
'Blue Boogaloo' and the tough tech-house mix of Leftfield's 'Dub Gusset'
to the balearic hip-hop of Yoshinori Sunahara's 'Love Beat' and the 10
minute ambient epic "Diary of a Lost Girl" by Christian Zimmerman
presents...
The compilation also features several vocal mixes including the
heartbreaking sub-aqua hip-pop of Nemo's 'Darkest Day' (lined-up for
full single release on Compost in 2001 but premiering here) and new
mixes of Detroit superstar-in-waiting Aaron Carl's lost house classic
'Crucified' for Rob Fleming's Sirkus label.
"Small Change" includes a couple of harder-to-find items from Ewan's
remix catalogue. Nova Nova's 'Bewildered' first surfaced on the F-Comm
'Megasoft Office' compilation: although the MAAS dub was promo'ed in
1999, Ewan's 'Les Parapluies' (Umbrellas - Translations Ed) vocal mix
is heard for the first time ever here. In addition there's a rare deep
garage reworking of country / soul singer Jeb Loy Nichols' 'Say Goodbye
to Christopher', released in the spring as a limited-edition taster for
his album 'Just What Time It Is' (which Ewan co-produced).
Also included are the superb remixes he has done for Soma, taking
Chaser's 'Blue Planet' to the dancefloor and his own classic rework of
'Look At Me Now, Falling'.
This release is simply a stunning testament to the deep blissed-out
style that Soma pride themselves on. Just kick back, grab a chilled
beer and wrap your ears around these soundscapes. The definition of
quality, sophistication and class.
