│║ AMG EXPERT REVIEW: In 1976, George Clinton enjoyed much greater ║│
│║ commercial success than before and became more than a cult figure ║│
│║ - only he didn't do it with Funkadelic. Parliament's 1976 albums ║│
│║ Mothership Connection and The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein were what ║│
│║ made him one of the most successful artists in soul and funk. Of ║│
│║ course, Parliament and Funkadelic were essentially the same band, ║│
│║ but while Parliament had an immediacy that appealed to ║│
│║ singles-minded black radio, Funkadelic remained basically album ║│
│║ oriented. Although more direct and less self-indulgent than early ║│
│║ Funkadelic dates like Maggot Brain and America Eats Its Young, ║│
│║ Hardcore Jollies was far from an album of hit singles. But it was ║│
│║ definitely an album of irresistible funk grooves, and no Clinton ║│
│║ devotee should be deprived of the joys of "Comin' Round the ║│
│║ Mountain," the eerie You Scared the Lovin' Out of Me," or an ║│
│║ inspired remake of "Cosmic Slop." The guitar-crunching title song ║│
│║ demonstrates how hard Clinton could rock, but in those days, ║│
│║ album rock radio wouldn't touch Funkadelic no matter how much ║│
│║ heavy guitar some of its songs employed. - Alex Henderson ║│
