You may recall Martin Herterich's rather
excellent Silent Fields album on the
Kesh imprint, released earlier on this
year, and this mini-album makes for a
winning extension of the artist's
mournfully meditative style. 'Staring
Across An Empty Room' opens the suite in
an understated and spartan fashion,
lacing quiet room recordings of piano
with cushioned background hiss,
reverse-reverb treatments and muffled,
resonant thwacks that form a slackened
backbeat. 'Estonia Part 1 - 2' continues
along a similar theme, during its
opening half, whisking together an airy
blend of minor-key piano minimalism and
atmospherically-charged air currents
before an electronic overhaul kicks in
midway, bringing high frequency digital
rasps and bitcrushed tonal warmth. The
finest track of the lot has to be 'Kyrie
(For A. PΣrt)', whose heavily processed
orchestral sounds take on a spine-
tinglingly beautiful quality redolent of
Alva Noto's Xerrox project. Once again
Under The Spire have delivered a
splendid take on modern classical-
ambient, and Herterich's only misstep
here is in not giving us more material
to feast on. Limited to 100 copies as
per usual, so get one while you can...
