Excellent second release from Stereolab bass player Simon Johns
side-project, Imitation Electric Piano. Named after Moscow's
foremost neon sign manufacturer, Trinity Neon delivers everything
one would expect from a Stereolab side project. The Chicago side
of the 'lab sound is firmly the order of the day on Aluminum
group style opener "gin lane" to the pauline oliveros meets
tortoise syncopation of "an hour is sixty minutes too long."
Although mainly instrumental, the vocal "Theme for I.E.P." is
among the many highlights, reminicent of "mars audiac quintet"
era Stereolab, with genius drumming courtesy of Ashley Marlow,
who was last heard on Dr. Rockit's Indoor Fireworks LP.
Supremely listenable, this is an album that will appeal equally
to fans of the genre as well as those of us who just want some
quality space age bachelor pad music.
