With Freakwater on something of a hiatus, Catherine Irwin took
the opportunity to put together a great CD in Cut Yourself A
Switch. This served as a great addition to Freakwater's
Appalachian country canon. So Janet Bean now steps up with what
she's been up to - and the answer is the often dazzling Dragging
Wonder Lake.
Rather than remain within the confines of Freakwater's sparser
arrangements and dedicated country flavour, Bean instead opts
for what has to be considered a somewhat bolder statement for
this day and age. Granted, few were making music like Freakwater
at the time of their inception (heck, consider their entire
catalog "essential") but they set a standard - meaning that many
have followed down the same path. With The Concertina Wire, Bean
offers music more akin to the fuller sounds of Americana. This
essentially makes for a disc that treads between honey-sweet
melodies and more rock-influenced sounds.
