│Additional Information to Charles Mingus - Jazz Composer's Workshop (Reissue) │

│ │
│Charles Mingus was just one of many musicians who was short-changed │
│in Ken BurnsÆ recent Manhattan-phone-book of a documentary Jazz. │
│But what was worse than the blink-and-you-missed-him tribute Mingus │
│got in the bloated retrospective, was the characterization he received. │
│Burns could come up with nothing more original than saddling the famed │
│bassist and composer with the jazzÆs last-angry-man clichΘ. │
│ │
│No follower of Mingus will deny the street-fighter reflexes and attitudes he │
│brought to many of his greatest works. Pithecanthropus Erectus, Blues │
│and Roots and The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady are all recordings │
│that overpower a listener with power and surprise. They expose a │
│musician at odds with the world and on the verge of eruption. │
│ │
│But simply studying the chip on MingusÆ shoulder is missing a lot. │
│ │
│He also left behind a wealth of material revealing a far more fragile and │
│reflective side than is first remembered. 1957Æs East Coasting is one │
│good example. The taciturn recording, which paired Mingus with Bill │
│Evans, among others, is a near-masterpiece of understatement. But │
│simmering just below its surface, thanks to Jimmy KnepperÆs robust │
│trombone work, is a current of kinetic energy that reminds fans that │
│the most common trait in MingusÆ work was momentum. │
│ │
│Recorded three years prior to East Coasting, Jazz Composers Workshop │
│sets the same tone as the 1957 release and explores many of the same │
│ideas in a similarly reserved setting. Six of the albumÆs tracks capture │
│Mingus in a tightly knit quintet setting; the other four find him fronting an │
│even sparser sounding quartet. │
│ │
│The opening track, ôPurple Heartö pushes things in the right direction │
│with an upbeat, saxophone-driven melody that showcases George │
│Barrow-who became something of a regular with Mingus-and Teo │
│Macero-who went on to greater fame as the producer behind most │
│of Miles DavisÆ and Thelonious MonkÆs Columbia recordings. ôEulogy │
│for Rudy Williamsö -a tribute to a nearly forgotten sax man-also displays │
│plenty of impressive reed work. │
│ │
│ôTea for Twoö spends only a few minutes with that familiar tune. In true │
│Mingus fashion, the band runs the melody in several different directions │
│including holdovers at ôI Want to be Happy,ö and ôBody and Soulö before │
│coming to rest in a New Orleans inspired finish. │
│ │
│There are also hints of things to come. The dour ôGregarian Chantö │
│smacks of the more heavy-handed composing that would come to │
│dominate MingusÆ later work, but his ôGetting Togetherö is an effervescent │
│romp with Macero shining. │
│ │
│Mingus fans will not be disappointed by the re-issue. Newer listeners │
│may also want to give Jazz Composers Workshop a try if only to hear │
│a more soothing side to the complex musician. │
