Whilst their recent release schedule has hinted at an
identity crisis down at Warp, this sudden broadening
of horizons has reaped some serious rewards for us
the listener. Alongside Jamie Lidell and Maximo Park,
Gravenhurst (aka Nick Talbot) is the latest trend
bucker to appear wearing the previously bleep-biased
badge of honour. First up on the A is 'The Velvet
Cell'; wherein Talbot crafts an icy breed of
experimental (kraut) rock, which compliments his
slack jawed vocals to perfection. Ending with a
ripple of post-rock that is Mogwai's 'Christmas
Steps' in all but name, 'The Velvet Cell' is backed
by Talbot's cover of The Kinks 'See My Friends', here
twisted into a ten minute bout of balls-to-the-wall
sonic mauling.
