│║ Savage! On The Streets, Or On The Sheets, He's A Savage: a ║│
│║ serious 70s statement and the cover says it all. But please don't ║│
│║ be afraid, this is an absolute gem. Don Julian's album is well ║│
│║ sought-after, having been sampled and bootlegged because of its ║│
│║ rarity. Beat merchants, sample kings, funk fanatics and anyone in ║│
│║ the club scene from London to Zurich, have been seeking high and ║│
│║ low for this desirable slice of vinyl. ║│
│║ ║│
│║ Riding high on last year's superb blaxploitation season at the ║│
│║ British Film Institute, this release complements the Stax release ║│
│║ of Melvin Van Peebles' Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (CDSXE ║│
│║ 103) which is also available on vinyl - this is essential for ║│
│║ mixers and funk fans world-wide. Savage was originally released ║│
│║ in 1973, in California, near the end of Money Records' output. ║│
│║ Though it is an obscure film, northern soul devotees will be ║│
│║ amused to spot the funky gun swinging female star - a US Decca ║│
│║ recording artist, Lada Edmund Jr. ║│
│║ ║│
│║ An infamous go go dancer, she recorded a still-in-demand single ║│
│║ called The LaRue - a wacky West Coast dance tribute. ║│
│║ Knowledgeable music lovers will be aware that Money Records was a ║│
│║ well established label, headed by Arthur Wright, a multi-talented ║│
│║ writer and arranger, along with writer and artist Don Julian of ║│
│║ the vocal group The Meadowlarks. The title track is a ║│
│║ mind-blowing guitar and brass-ridden slab of chase music, written ║│
│║ by Don and Arthur. Exciting enough to knock Shaft sideways. ║│
│║ ║│
│║ Lay It On Your Head is more on a jazzy tip - if you dig Donald ║│
│║ Byrd, this is for you, with surprises. The guitar work by Don ║│
│║ Julian is excellent and I wish I knew who the session guys were. ║│
│║ Where I'm Coming From is in a similar vein - flutes and bongos ║│
│║ galore and fades out with a composition by Arthur. ║│
│║ ║│
│║ Side two starts with My Favourite Beer joint, 8 minutes in a ║│
│║ lighter sax-soaked number - nice and easy -Janitzio has a spoken ║│
│║ intro, talking about soul and latin brothers - more samples here ║│

│║ real laid back tune as is Just Kiss Me, the finale. Be a Savage - ║│
