Well We bring you the heat, hot off the press The New Kyprios reppin his
solo work from the group Sweatshop Union.
About Sweatshop Union they are a Canadian hip hop collective formed in
2000 when four politically-minded rap acts Dirty Circus, Creative Minds,
Innocent Bystanders, and solo artist Kyprios all came together
"to create a powerful, distinctive voice" and to produce their first
album, which was published in 2001.Known for an inventive and
socially-conscious sound, Sweatshop Union's music focuses on being
"honest" commenting on issues ranging from the war in Iraq, the plight
of the poor and working-class, to the negativity and misogyny of
mainstream hip-hop. The band signed with Battleaxe Records in 2002 and
their self-titled debut album was re-released as Local 604.
The group also began touring North America with a number of other rap
and hip-hop artists, including their label-mates Swollen Members.
Their 2004 album Natural Progression led to a Juno Award nomination and
three Western Canadian Music Award nominations. They have been called
part of "Vancouver's hip-hop renaissance" and had their music featured
in CBC Radio's "Make Some Noise" documentary. They have expanded their
touring to the east coast, hoping to increase awareness about their
music. The band's most recent album, Water Street, was released in 2008.
& In early 2009, Sweatshop Union's "Oh My" won in The 8th Annual
Independent Music Awards for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Song.
The classic definition of the term MC is one that has the ability to
grip a mic and control the crowd, and Kyprios has more than earned this
title. He is a commanding presence on stage, able to hold the crowd in
silent rapture as he drops an introspective piece that draws heavily
from spoken word, only to suddenly flip it and incite a sea of thrusting
hands with a rapid fire set of punchline-laden lyrical flows.
Able to deliver a seamless blend of rapping, singing and harmonizing,
The Vancouver, BC native's larynx is a potent stash of varied lyrical
weapons. The release of his record Say Something lead to Kyprios touring
with Busta Rhymes, Wyclef Jean, and Naughty By Nature, but ultimately
Sony's pop-oriented marketing did not take hold and the album was not a
success by major label standards. Regardless, Kyp's group Sweatshop
Union continued to make forward progress, & Kyp is ready to move forward
with his career as a solo artist.
