Remote Control is Scottish producer Neil McDonald, who was spotted
by 16B and signed to the Aloal imprint with a view to releasing
this album. And it's clear that Omid 16B has a good eye, for this
is an outstanding debut that majors on techno but includes elements
of tech house, funk and trance within its ten tracks.
'Golden Acre', which featured on 16B's 'Everything, All Of Them,
Every Year' compilation last year, kicks off with a nagging bass
line that knows how to fill a floor. 'Breakout' meanwhile is an
exemplary techno groove that unexpectedly breaks out into a jazzy
interlude half way through, surprising but very effective.
McDonald funks things up on the superb '4pm in Frisco', the bass
line suggesting a subtle Stevie Wonder influence, before the
equally danceable 'Transmission Manager' and the slower
'Rephlexions'. The final 'Theme Sequence' goes straight for the
jugular when the beats arrive, an ideal end of the night tune.
This is an unmissable debut - catch it if you can!
'Built On Volcanoes is Neil McDonald's debut album for Alola
Records.
Back in 2000, a demo was sent to Alola Records boss Omid Nourizadeh
who quickly signed McDonald to the label. The first single 'Bruno'
packed full of scary noises, tribal drums and turbo charged
percussion went on to sell over 3000 units and was championed by
the likes of Justin Robertson, Laurnet Garnier and Danny Howells.
Darren Emerson also selected the track for his mix compilation on
the much-respected Global Underground label.
Other standout tracks to watch for are 'Golden Acre' with its
sizzling beats, hooky chords and monster bassline. It has been
tearing up dancefloors and receiving big reactions from DJQ,
Domenic Cappello and a certain Mr. Weatherall. '4pm in Frisco'
starts on a more disco vibe with swooshing effects and builds into
percussion driven floor filler, 'Tranquility Base' and 'Hermes'
illustrate McDonald's diverse production skills and musical talent,
offering a chilled break to the heavier cuts on the album.
