A cornerstone of Hip-Hop's late 90's indie-uprise, DJ Spinna made
much of his first impression on listeners as the musical background
of his group The Jigmastas (having released an impressive slew of
12 inches singles on his then self-run label Beyond Real during
this time) as well as providing the canvas for an array of that
era's lyrical giants. As an emcee in New York City, if you didn't
have a Spinna production under your belt, well, you just hadn't
accomplished all there was to accomplish. Everyone from Mos Def,
Talib Kweli to Pharaohe Monch boasted Spinna beats to prove their
worth to the scene. At the height of indie-kingpin Rawkus Records
heyday, Spinna was in demand, also churning out timeless classics
of the era from the likes of J-Live, Mr. Complex and The Polyrhythm
Addicts (his all-too-brief collabo-group with Apani B., Shaabam
Sadeeq and Complex). Spinna is back with his latest foray into the
world of boogie.
Throughout the life of BBE very few dj's have left a long last
impression on our ethos - Real music for real people. Vincent
Williams is one of a few active djs today whose versatility and all
round knowledge covers so much ground. From Rock to Jazz, Reggae to
Hip Hop, Sountracks to House, Soul, Funk, Disco or Techno this man
has the knowledge and can rock parties as good as any leading
lights in any of the forementioned scenes.
On top of this all he finds time to create music either for his Hip
Hop outfit the Jigmastas or make house records and remix tracks for
De La Soul and lots more great artists.
Boogie - the street slang for soulful dance music is the perfect
starting point for this 5 part series dedicated to showing off the
many faces of DJ Spinna. A child of the 80's Spinna lived through
the boogie heydays. The jams on this compilation rocked the
airwaves in Brooklyn and beyond.
This bumper release is DJ Spinna's tribute to the genre. This
series is as much about the quality music as it is the undying
passion of an obsessive music lover whose dedication has touched so
many throughout various parties such as Wonderfull or his masterful
productions that are gracing iPods and clubs worldwide.
