Of all the techno auteurs to emerge from the 313 district, Shake
has to be the most underrated and overlooked. His tape editing and
programming skills have been employed in both the Transmat and
Metroplex studios, while his releases for everyone from
International Deejay Gigolo to the legendary Frictional and Tresor
imprints are seriously prized possessions, besides massively
influencing the likes of Autechre, Actress, Pendle Coven and
thousands of educated fanboys knowing whats good and right in the
world. This twelve is a precursor to a rumoured retrospective of
Frictional classics (fuckin right!) and features the first new
material from the great man in years. Even for anyone familiar
with his gear this is some of his tightest, oddest and floor
wrecking material, so quite obviously we're all over this, big
time. 'Levitate' opens with distorted frequencies driven by
skipping bass bump syncopations, while 'Indagoo' belies his love
of 80's wave funk with a fat skronked bassline under fractured,
minimal percussion. 'Space Probes' is one of his prime rhythm
constructions, sounding like a hardware version of T++ with mean
tape delays and heavy industrial atmospheres, leaving 'It Erased
Me' to finish the set off with intricately kinked 4/4 vibes edited
in his unique vision. These are gonna last about 2 minutes so you
know what you gotta do!
