Release Notes:
Feel good music is a guilty pleasure of mine. The sugary, almost
granular teeth-rotting enjoyment of dance rhythms, synthesizers, and
ridiculous lyrics is an experience more beautifully accentuated by the
early-summer breeze talking to me through my window. It all comes
together rather well on PyramidÆs EP Jupiter.
The album begins in a decidedly unceremonious manner, introducing its
first trackÆs foundation on the very first downbeat. ItÆs all uphill
from there, sprinkling in various generic synth sounds, frivolous
lyrical episodes, and those increasingly common random audio clips of
scientific dissertations that seem to show up in music these days. Not
surprisingly dubbed ôMedicine.ö
This is mostly how the album goes û ôBoy Toyö summons memories of Mario
Kart and other timeless Nintendo scores (bleeps and bloops?), ôBed-Stuy
(Super-Cop)ö toys with crowd noise and ghostly vocals over a dance
number cemented by bubbly, almost Teddy Bears-esque riffs. DonÆt be
mislead û this album does not break any new ground. Conversely, it does
not pretend to be something it is not; there are no pretentious
attempts to stuff unnecessary words or sounds into a defined composure.
(This claim even manages to hold up on an un-innovative rendition of
80Æs queen Cindy LauperÆs ôGirls Just Want To Have Fun.ö)
So while the breeze continues to taunt me from my prison of
criticalisms, I conclude that this album is a solid composite of what
youÆll find at a Pyramid live show. ItÆs a good atmosphere built for a
good time. You wonÆt find the next pop stars here, nor the most
reclusive electronic group doing all they can to avoid their bloating
celebrity. Just some dudes trying to make a party happen.
The band changed their name from Starfucker to Pyramid to play in the
EU. The Jupiter EP was released as Starfucker in the US last year, and
will get a UK release in the UK early next, as Pyramid.
