██▓▓ "Long live the revolution!". "Carpe diem!". ██▓▓
██▓▓ "The ball is round!". The truest truths are ██▓▓
██▓▓ short, sharp, kicking & catchy! And because ██▓▓
██▓▓ this is so, the new Sand 11 album is simply ██▓▓
██▓▓ called: "SAND 11". A title that by no means ██▓▓
██▓▓ results from a lack of imagination, but ██▓▓
██▓▓ music-wise says it all. "Sand 11" is about ██▓▓
██▓▓ cuts, precision and a restrained offensive ██▓▓
██▓▓ at the right moment in time: "This is how we ██▓▓
██▓▓ live! This is how we play music!" So say ██▓▓
██▓▓ Jimi Siebels (also known as Egoexpress' ██▓▓
██▓▓ better half) and Pascal Fuhlbrⁿgge (also ██▓▓
██▓▓ known as founding member of the band ██▓▓
██▓▓ "Kolossale Jugend" and the L'Age D'Or ██▓▓
██▓▓ label). Those of you out there who hear ██▓▓
██▓▓ their calls will be delighted, even if you ██▓▓
██▓▓ eat, love and do sports differently to them, ██▓▓
██▓▓ since this record is a universal statement ██▓▓
██▓▓ that goes just a bit too far as regards ██▓▓
██▓▓ (life-)style. Minimalist crossover, so to ██▓▓
██▓▓ speak. Nice, nice! When comparing "Sand 11" ██▓▓
██▓▓ with last year's Sand 11 album, "Around The ██▓▓
██▓▓ Day In A World", the "minimalist turn" ██▓▓
██▓▓ (whatever you do, don't misinterpret this ██▓▓
██▓▓ term as referring to intellectual, grating ██▓▓
██▓▓ sound abstractions) becomes even more ██▓▓
██▓▓ obvious. Instead of indulging in sample ██▓▓
██▓▓ universes as on their infamous debut, the ██▓▓
██▓▓ two Hamburg-based producers now ascertain ██▓▓
██▓▓ the requirements and possibilities of the ██▓▓
██▓▓ essence: what can you do with a bass, hi-hat ██▓▓
██▓▓ and voice? A culinary metaphor lies on the ██▓▓
██▓▓ tip of my tongue. But then Spartan meals do ██▓▓
██▓▓ taste better than rich ones, as some of the ██▓▓
██▓▓ specialities from Hamburg's cuisine - also ██▓▓
██▓▓ prepared with very basic ingredients - ██▓▓
██▓▓ prove. Evidence? No problem, the freshly ██▓▓
██▓▓ pressed product lies in front of you. Songs ██▓▓
██▓▓ such as "Neuer Ordner", "Tim" (Buckley) or ██▓▓
██▓▓ "Shudden" are funky, pushy low-end house ██▓▓
██▓▓ tracks that do without any superfluous ██▓▓
██▓▓ frills. Of course there's still a sample ██▓▓
██▓▓ here and there, one or two effects, after ██▓▓
██▓▓ all Sand 11 have done quite a bit of ██▓▓
██▓▓ experimenting and so forth for this ██▓▓
██▓▓ production. Nevertheless this release ██▓▓
██▓▓ presents them as being not the least bit ██▓▓
██▓▓ talkative, Jimi and Pascal proficiently ██▓▓
██▓▓ counter the opulence of UK garage and R&B ██▓▓
██▓▓ with an amazingly compressed sound, whose ██▓▓
██▓▓ density addresses every part of your body. ██▓▓
██▓▓ My personal favourite, "Chainreaction" ██▓▓
██▓▓ (incidentally also the next single release) ██▓▓
██▓▓ puts the appellative character of this ██▓▓
██▓▓ record into a nutshell: "To get more ██▓▓
██▓▓ satisfaction, give a little more party ██▓▓
██▓▓ action", sings the marvellousfemale guest ██▓▓
██▓▓ vocalist Peta Devlin. The crowd hasn't been ██▓▓
██▓▓ given such a direct and defiant kick in the ██▓▓
██▓▓ butt for a long time! Though Jimi und Pascal ██▓▓
██▓▓ retreated into their own for studio-walls ██▓▓
██▓▓ for the production of this follow-up album, ██▓▓
██▓▓ away from the hectic Imperial Studios, they ██▓▓
██▓▓ have nevertheless obeserved what's going on ██▓▓
██▓▓ in the world and have learned from the ██▓▓
██▓▓ currently hippest dancefloor strategists. ██▓▓
██▓▓ For example "My Bee Baby" boils down the ██▓▓
██▓▓ omnipresent Timbaland-Baroque to a minimum ██▓▓
██▓▓ of complexity; surprisingly the result ██▓▓
██▓▓ reminds you of the pop reggae classic ██▓▓
██▓▓ "Uptown Top Rankin" by Althea & Donna. ██▓▓
██▓▓ Charming and plausible! Mr Siebels, Mr ██▓▓
██▓▓ Fuhlbrⁿgge - how on earth did you do it? A ██▓▓
██▓▓ possible answer: they have found a new way ██▓▓
██▓▓ of questioning and loosening up the rigid ██▓▓
██▓▓ 4/4-principle. This then also includes ██▓▓
██▓▓ terrorist noise escapades like on ██▓▓
██▓▓ "Flipkicker", dub bass like on the ██▓▓
██▓▓ enchanting "My Bee Baby" or the confusing ██▓▓
██▓▓ background clattering on "Shudden". Once ██▓▓
██▓▓ again the limits - to be more precise: ██▓▓
██▓▓ man-machine limits -are being tested. ██▓▓
██▓▓ Because many of the sounds that convincingly ██▓▓
██▓▓ sound cybertronic, in reality don't ██▓▓
██▓▓ originate from some kind of software, but ██▓▓
██▓▓ wetware. Yes, you read it correctly - Jimi ██▓▓
██▓▓ and Pascal have orally simulated the ██▓▓
██▓▓ hi-hats, organs and guitars. Only the bass ██▓▓
██▓▓ drum seemed a little too problematic, says ██▓▓
██▓▓ Jimi. The dazzling highlight of this record ██▓▓
██▓▓ is definitely the final track "Drinks With ██▓▓
██▓▓ Umbrellas". In a sensationally manner, Sand ██▓▓
██▓▓ 11 break out of their self-prescribed ██▓▓
██▓▓ retraint. The cultural drafts they have ██▓▓
██▓▓ intertwined here could hardly be more ██▓▓
██▓▓ different: A country-esque Pedal Steel ██▓▓
██▓▓ guitar (played by Jimi's brother, Jakobus, ██▓▓
██▓▓ as well as the highly talented Sterne ██▓▓
██▓▓ bassist, Thomas Wenzel) meets phat, deep R&B ██▓▓
██▓▓ beat. On top of that Peta Devlin and Sterne ██▓▓
██▓▓ vocalist Frank Spilker sing bizarre "gaga" ██▓▓
██▓▓ lyrics in unison. Overwhelming and great - ██▓▓
██▓▓ without the masses of alcohol in Sand11's ██▓▓
██▓▓ minibar that would probably have been ██▓▓
██▓▓ unthinkable. Yet this ground-breaking ██▓▓
██▓▓ Country/R&B-combination should by no means ██▓▓
██▓▓ simply summon fun-filled crossover hype. If ██▓▓
██▓▓ you've ever had a look at the maze-like Sand ██▓▓
██▓▓ 11 web site (www.sand11.de) you know that ██▓▓
██▓▓ Jimi and Pascal have no intention of sucking ██▓▓
██▓▓ up to the consumer. "Service" is an ██▓▓
██▓▓ unfamiliar word for them, which is why you ██▓▓
██▓▓ don't hear any pithy filter effects and ██▓▓
██▓▓ disco samples on "Sand 11". As Jimi and ██▓▓
██▓▓ Pascal do not try to smilingly talk you ██▓▓
██▓▓ intogetting something you've already got, ██▓▓
██▓▓ the twelve tracks on "Sand 11" count as the ██▓▓
