"Volume is, in all manner of speaking, paramount to A Monster
In Soul, the second album by International Karate. The album is
but a knifes-edge away from ferocious when experienced loud,
sublime and subtle when lingering down low, the band going to
pains on this album to delve into the dulcet, the spatial, and
the very very distant, as well as exploring the caverns of
sturdy structurous rock at its most glacial and revelrous.
Recorded between mid 2003 and early 2004 in Melbourne, A
Monster In Soul was initially destined to be difficult;
International Karate's songwriting having taken a distinct turn
into sounds based more on melody and evidently much shorter and
less expansive. But in the early stages of recording A Monster
In Soul the bands inherent interests took over, International
Karate laying down the base for each track and then
meticulously building upon it layer upon layer until there was
nothing left to detail. "How very Kevin Shields!" I hear some
of you say, well, maybe not THAT meticulous, but they certainly
aimed to create a balance where the density of the musical
soundscape would not detract focus from the melodic heart of
the songs.
Vocalist Daniel Brownrigg guests once again, here on three
beautiful tracks, offering the songs a buoyancy that
contributes immediately to the integrity of the albums
harmonic, melodic, and resonant intentions. In light of their
debut album Weapons Of Mass Protection (SRP014), A Monster In
Soul is a real solidification of International Karate's bravest
musical assets: their economic utilization of space, their
affection for rhythm, and their wonderful melodic endeavors.
Like Slint's Spiderland, the music of The For Carnation, Low,
Do Make Say Think's & Yet & Yet, and Mogwai's Come On Die
Young, coupled with the salty lingerings of Japan's Mono,
Explosions In The Sky, and Sigur Ros, A Monster In Soul creeps
and crawls blissfully into every corner, every nook, and fills
the air with a sense of architecture, of surety and warmth."
