"'Weapons of mass protection' is the debut album from Melbourne
four-piece International Karate. Formed back in 1997, the songs
on the album are the result of a long period spent honing their
sound; discovering their weaknesses, re-setting their
intentions and of late, becoming revered as a powerful live
force. With their teeth imbedded in the music of their youth
(My bloody valentine, Slowdive, New Order, Red house painters,
Swervedriver and Spiritualized) and in more recent infatuations
like Labradford, Low, Sigur Ros, Mogwai and The For Carnation,
International Karate tread the hot-bed that has become known as
'post-rock'; a sensation of sound inclined towards ambience
with the lingering structures of rock at it's most languid.
This album exudes incredible subtlety. Rhythmically the band
meld their amazing live presence with an underbelly of
wall-of-sound inspired guitar and organ. They ponder the
soaring heights of rock with an elegance and interlude with
belies the fact that this is their debut album, bookended by
the odd frantic expression (namely the closing track 'We were
like animals') and occasional piano melodies. The songs are
cinematic, drawing on textural rock tones to display the shape
within their tonal forms. Where they drift lovingly,
International Karate juxtapose their own casuality via their
ability to rock-out live and leave a room sweltering in a thick
cloud of resonance a la Mogwai. On that front, International
Karate have played live consistently over the past 2 years
including playing alongside US trio Labradford on their 2002
Australian tour, Japan's Bush of ghosts, on the 3RRR-FM stage
at the Melbourne Fringe Festival Brunswick Street parade and
numerous residency and headline shows at Melbourne's Punters
Club. International Karate will tell you that they are
primarily a foursome without the inclusion of vocals, yet on
'Weapons of mass protection' two tracks feature the sublime of
their friend Daniel Brownrigg. 'Weapons of mass protection' is
the debut album from International Karate, but it also signals
the beginning of something wonderful for everyone including the
band themselves. International Karate are: Callan Fox, Mark
Mascia, Aaron Pepper, and Andrew Polydorou."
