Release Notes: ░██▓
██▒
Journey to the Planet of Birds is the last album of the ██░
"beats to blaze to" trilogy that started way back in 1999 ██
(you might even say it started in '97 when I recorded the ██
songs "Boatman" and "Every Cloud Can Cause Amazement" and ██
mailed a cassette to G'Brey's smoky dorm room at Columbia). ██
I'm not saying I'll never make another album, but I always ██
envisioned this series as a trilogy and to me it feels ██
complete. ██
██
It took a while, partly because it's my longest and most ██
intricate album yet, partly because it's getting hard to ██
find labels that aren't scared to put out an album with ██
literally hundreds of samples on it, and partly because I've ██
spent the last few years busying myself with other things: ██
finding side-hustles when I needed to pay the bills, touring ██
the world with one of my musical heroes, crank calling cops, ██
falling in and out of love, studying massage therapy, and a ██
number of other distractions. ██
██
During that same time my grandmother, Frances Vann, died ██
after 101 astoundingly vibrant years of life, leaving behind ██
the Conover grand piano she inherited from her aunt, Harriet ██
Irene Field (who was born in 1892 and herself lived to be ██
103, continuing to play the piano until her last days). That ██
piano, now passed down to me through my aunt Nancy Vann ██
Berrett, is the one you hear on the album. ██
