│ │
│ It's a commonplace of sample culture that anyone, anywhere in │
│ the world, could be sitting in their bedroom right now making │
│ the records which will soundtrack your life tomorrow. But unless │
│ that bedroom happens to be in Hoxton, it's not an idea that's │
│ often explored in reality. Welcome, then, Ninja's first Polish │
│ signing, the production and DJ duo Skalpel. │
│ │
│ Skalpel are Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudlo, from Wroclaw, Poland. │
│ The pair are talented DJs, who have had four mixes aired on │
│ Ninja's Solid Steel radio show over the last two years. Two of │
│ these sessions were also released as "Virtual Cuts" - widely │
│ held to be the best mixtapes in the history of electronic music │
│ in Poland. │
│ │
│ The year 2000, though, was the landmark year for the group. │
│ Having interviewed DJ Vadim for a Polish hip hop magazine, the │
│ pair were soon discussing samples, obscure breaks and the Polish │
│ music scene with him. All of which led to a combined tour with │
│ VadimÆs Russian Percussion, at which they presented an amazing │
│ 4-deck show all over th country. Later that year Skalpel │
│ released a demo CD-R titled "Polish Jazz", which not only │
│ received a lot of critical acclaim, but also led to the duo │
│ signing a contract with Ninja Tune, not so much from VadimÆs │
│ prompting as from the sheer quality of the music when it reached │
│ the top of the demo box! │
│ │
│ For the last two years, then, Marcin and Igor have been digging │
│ in the crates, trying to build the most exciting collection of │
│ samples from Polish Jazz records. Now they are slowly unleashing │
│ the music created from these sounds. Their aim is to resurrect │
│ the dusty & smoky spirit of 60s and 70s Polish jazz and then │
│ "reimagine it for 21st century audiophiles." │
│ │
│ The results, we're sure you'll agree, are startling - warm, │
│ crisp and complex without being complicated. A refreshing break │
│ with prevailing UK trendmongering and banwagoneering, Skalpel │
│ are just focussing on doing it right. Expect more... │
│ │
│ JCE brought you the vinyl version of this EP earlier this year, │
│ here is the cd with 2 additional tracks (we didn't include the │
│ video). Thanks to our man in Warsaw for this baby ;] │

│
│ soup was founded in early 2002, with the intention of releasing
│ the hip-hop, trip-hop, lo-fi and turntablism that has been slept
│ on by other groups. We're a small, friendly group with a real
│ passion for our music, who're fed up of the overly competitive,
│ elitist and aggressive attitude of certain groups.
