    █ █ The fact that Robert Redford's series of █ █
    █ █ politically-charged movies actually got █ █
    █ █ made at all in the 1970s is a feat █ █
    █ █ deserving of applause. Unlike most █ █
█ █ Hollywood actors who merely dabbled in █ █
    █ █ socially-conscious movies but eventually █ █
█ █ returned to the safe harbor of the █ █
█ █ mainstream, in his heyday, Redford was █ █
█ █ able to use his boyish good looks to █ █
█ █ lure audiences away from the usual blase █ █
█ █ Tinseltown crap and see the type of █ █
    █ █ morally ambiguous films they normally █ █
█ █ would have avoided like the plague. Of █ █
█ █ course, Redford has still appeared in █ █
    █ █ distinctly Hollywood fare, from The █ █
█ █ Sting to Indecent Proposal, but with █ █
    █ █ Brubaker, his 1980 potboiler about the █ █
    █ █ rights of prisoners in a tyrannical █ █
    █ █ Arkansas prison, Redford proved again █ █
    █ █ that his box-office draw was enough to █ █
█ █ get complicated material like this made. █ █
    █ █ █ █
    █ █ In the film, Redford plays a warden who █ █
    █ █ witnesses firsthand the horrors of █ █
█ █ prison life when he goes undercover. █ █
█ █ Once he witnesses these atrocities, he █ █
    █ █ gets embroiled in a statewide ethics █ █
    █ █ challenge, one that ranges from run-ins █ █
█ █ with local jail attendees to screaming █ █
█ █ matches with the governor of Arkansas █ █
    █ █ himself. █ █
    █ █ █ █
    █ █ The flipside to Redford's ability to █ █
█ █ bring tough material like this to the █ █
█ █ screen is the fact that most of the time █ █
    █ █ the films aren't as good as their █ █
    █ █ political pedigree would have you █ █
    █ █ believe. Redford's choice of subject █ █
█ █ material is good, but his performances █ █
█ █ (and the scripts) are often banal. Every █ █
    █ █ once in a while Brubaker really delivers █ █
█ █ one to the gut, but most of the time it █ █
    █ █ is nothing more than a series of shots █ █
    █ █ framing a pretty Robert thinking or █ █
█ █ brooding about the terrible state of █ █
    █ █ prisons in America. █ █
    █ █ █ █
█ █ Brubaker may be more notable and █ █
    █ █ memorable for its political leanings █ █
    █ █ than its dramatic success. It's also █ █
    █ █ cool to see a young Morgan Freeman as a █ █
█ █ hypersensitive inmate in trouble and the █ █
    █ █ inimitable Yaphet Kotto as Redford's █ █
    █ █ liaison, but as a whole, Brubaker is █ █
    █ █ nothing more than a whole lot of █ █
█ █ mediocrity. It certainly has its heart █ █
    █ █ in the right place, but it doesn't quite █ █
    █ █ pack the punch it should. █ █

    █ █ wrote and recorded isn't in the film at █ █
